Highlights

Overview

Kanchenjunga Trekking is a glorious adventure into the heart of Himalaya where the range of both valley and mountain is tough to interpret. This high altitude off the beaten Himalayan trek will leave an impact on you forever.

Kanchenjunga trekking is unspoiled trek that takes us to the massive and captivating world’s third highest mountain Kanchenjunga (8,586m). The peak lies in a larger portion of the Himalayas known as the “The Kanchenjunga Himal” that includes 16 peaks over 7,000m (23,000 ft). Most of the region is protected as part of a Kanchenjunga Conservation Area that protects the natural beauty of the region and cultural traditions of a diverse range of ethnic groups. The mountain consists of 5 separate peaks and in Tibetan Kanchenjunga means the “Five Treasures of the Snow” which mean Gold, Silver, Precious Stones, Grain, and Holy Scriptures.

Kanchenjunga trekking route is opened for foreigners for trekking since 1988. Yet, Special trekking permit is required for trekking from Government registered Nepal Trekking Agency. The peak is considered holy by the people of Nepal and climbers have always stopped just short of the summit out of respect for the mountain. The routes are virtually untouched by modernization making perfect for the adventurous trekker looking for something unique.

After a flight to Biratnagar and a four-hour drive to Basantpur, the Kanchenjunga Trekking starts. Truly heaven, the trek offers best views of gleaming mountains blanketed in snow, high verdant, misty clouds forming a canopy around the forest, spectacular wildlife slight and dramatic landscapes. During the spring season, the beauty of this trail increases with Rhododendrons, Magnolias, orchid and other varieties of flowers. A maze of peaks and ridges have isolated the communities from higher trails and lower valleys. Simply, trekking through the trail is nothing but setting oneself closer to the big mountains along the alluring forest to the highest valley and the rolling-meadows with the grazing yaks herded by the Lepchas. The trail crosses the Mewa Khola at Dobhan and follows the Tamur Koshi. The path to Kanchenjunga climbs through the settlements of Sherpa with a backdrop of the Kanchenjunga massif.

At Ghusna, a Sherpa village, gompas and prayer flags can be seen in plenty. Throughout the trekking, trekkers get to relish the stunning panoramic view of the massive mountain peaks such as Lhotse (8,516m), Everest (8,848m), Kanchenjunga (8,586m), Makalu (8,481m), and many others. After crossing the junction of Lhonak Glacier and the valley, we come to an extraordinarily beautiful clearing with the magnificent landscape of unspeakable beauty where we set camps for the day. Lhonaks exploration continues for some days which includes going to Pangpema to view Kanchenjunga north face. Then slowly descending through Tortong, Yamphudim, Khebang, Phakholing, and Tharpu, we reach Bhadrapur from where we take a flight back to Kathmandu.

Best time for Kanchenjunga Trekking
The best times for this trek are mid-March to early-May and October to mid-November. There is higher visibility of the landscape throughout these months and also the temperature is cooler in the primary few days of the trek. Travellers should avoid going for trekking during the monsoon as the paths get slippery and roads remain to obstruct due to heavy rains. In the winter season, the trekking is often not possible as it snows heavenly and trails become inaccessible and weather quite foul.

Note: The trip is taken into account to be terribly tough as a result of the travelers have to be compelled to be trekking at a very high altitude so you need to be physically fit for trekking.

We, at WalkAbout International, offer an exclusive Kanchenjunga Trekking of 22 days to turn your dream of trekking on challenging trail into a reality. We create a customized trekking itinerary as per trekkers/travelers wish with an amazing experience of Himalayan trekking in Nepal.
