Highlights

Overview

Tucked between the most visited Annapurna and Manaslu regions, Nar Phu is a true hidden gem that gives trekkers a rare opportunity to explore unspoiled valleys that feature a mix of raw Himalayan nature and ancient Buddhist culture.

Rugged and wild Nar Phu Valley Trek pursues you to the exotic valley Nar Phu, one of the remote and alluring regions located on the north of Annapurna. A delightful journey to the gorgeous yet untouched valley filled with an exotic landscape of Annapurna massif, combining high peak and pass Knog- La (5200m); magnificent alpine scenery and, in Tibet-like flavor make this trek the best-known tourist area of the Annapurna trekking routes. This area is new for trekkers and receives very less traveler therefore if you are looking for a less crowded trekking path there's none better than this one.

Closed to tourism until 2002, Nar Phu Valley region remained largely untouched and uninfluenced by the modern world and mass tourism and often referred to as ‘The Hidden Valley Trek’. A special trekking permit through government registered Nepal trekking Agency and a minimum of 2 people are required to get into Nar Phu valley. The path is filled with peaceful religious sites and villages of Tibetan heritage that embody long-established practice of trading, yak herding, and harvesting indigenous herbs for medicine. Wandering around the village and observing this local life untainted by the outside world is fascinating.

The trail starts from either Chame or Dharapani after driving from Kathmandu. We hike on the Annapurna circuit trail to Koto up to Meta from there we cross the bridge over the Marshyangdi river leading to Nar Phu Valley. The trail is relatively challenging but rewarding – particularly for those with a keen interest in remote communities and their traditional ways of life. The trek takes you up narrow gorges to medieval villages passing through impressive Buddhist chortens, herds of blue sheep and spectacular cliffside trails.

The narrow forest entrance opens up to a huge expansion of snowy peaks of mountains, Kang Garu and Pisang and several other ancient villages, ruins and monasteries. We explore the alpine valley over Naar and cross the Kang La Pass (5306m/ 17408ft) to Tilicho base camp. The Kang La Pass is a particular highlight where trekkers will be able to spot a myriad of peak included Annapurna II (7937m), Gangapura (7455m) and Tilicho Peak (7134m).

Traversing through the Himalayan pine trees and Chorten gate that labels the gateway to Nar Phu, we come into contact with remote high plateaus Tibetan villages built of stone. Then we hike up to the magnificent Tilicho lake and cross Mesokanto pass and get access to Muktinath and Jomsom trails. After a final stop at Tatopani to relax in the hot springs we drive to Pokhara then back to Kathmandu.
